I just noticed an article in Engadget that pointed out that advertisements on web pages are increasingly used to spread malware. So, in addition to being annoying, ads are also becoming a serious security threat. Ads (and any malware in them) are delivered through ad networks very quickly to a very broad audience, and after a short time the ad is gone, leaving few clues to investigators. Infection points thus include big and respectable websites that have generally been considered safe. Malware designers can even target specific audiences with the content of the ad. It seems like a perfect channel for malware distribution. No doubt the use of ad networks to distribute malware will increase in the future.
Update 2016-03-16: New big attack was coming fast (Link to article in Register).
Update 2016-08-03: And a new use case, that can steal ssl protected data (Link to article in Engadget).
Update 2016-12-08: And a new use case, but with a exceptional implementation (Link to article in Engadget).
Update 2016-12-15: And a new use case, but now targetting your router instead of the browser (Link to article in bleepingcomputer).
And this then gives me a nice opportunity to bring up (again) the fact that there are no ads in WishSimply. (At least not banners from ad networks... just thinking that perhaps this blog post could be considered one :) )
Anyway, you can use WishSimply yourself or ask your friends or customers to use it with a clear conscience knowing that you are not directing them to a site that might infect their devices with malware.
Of course, the net is full of ads and they can't be avoided, but at least it would be nice to know that you don't recommend a site or direct your friends to a service that will infect their computer with some malware the next day.
And while we are now discussing this topic ... You might also want to install some ad blocker software to your desktop browser or smart phone (Apple has allowed that from iOS9 onwards). In addition to protecting you from malware from advertisements, it will also speed up your browsing considerably and possibly decrease your phone bill. Some parties claim they can speed up your regular mobile browsing experience by as much as 4-fold.
With WishSimply you don't need that, however, since we don't have ads and we have put a lot of effort to making Wishsimply very fast.
