Today we’re talking about Garbarino, an Argentinian wishlist service and the first review we do about a Spanish speaking page. This company is the oldest retail store in Argentina. It has more than 240 shops across the entire country. Established in 1951, they managed to sort out some hard times and keep a steady growth. In 1999 they joined in the internet frenzy and created their own online store with its own wishlist service. Being this said, let’s start at once.
Privacy and Security
Alright, let’s talk about privacy and security. At the bottom of the main page you’ll find a link to their “Privacy Policies”. Given that the site is written in Spanish, look for: “Políticas de Privacidad”. However, that page doesn’t say too much. It only states that you may request withdrawal or elimination of your personal data whenever you want, but that’s it. No information about how the treat your data, or if they sell, trade or give it to third parties. There’s no information either about how they store your data, if they do it it, or if it’s even protected. Nothing, nada. The wishlist site doesn’t display 3rd party ads. Also, it has SSL protection, earning an “A” from the trusted internet security site SSLlabs.com. However, they make extensive use of 3rd party cookies, such as Google, Facebook, Hotjar, CrazyEgg and Criteo. Some of these ones track everything you do in the website. I find this alarming, we don’t have any idea about what they may do with this information. No check mark neither for “Respects your privacy” nor for “No affiliates”.
Create your wishlist
Well, to access Garbarino’s wishlist, either you may use the wishlist’s link, listas.garbarino.com, or enter through the store’s main page. In first place, you must enter to garbarino.com. There you’ll see some links, look for “Lista de Regalos”, or wish list. That one will take you to the wishlist main page.
Signing Up
Well, now let’s talk about the wish list creation process. You may create it using the links “Creá tu lista” (create your list) or “Ingresar” (log in). For the first case, the site will show you an example of how your wishlist may look. Then you’ll have to sign up. For the last one, you may sign up at once. This wish list has a great disadvantage. You need to be Argentinian and provide a valid ID and phone number in order to register to the site. Given that it is a dedicated wish list service of an Argentinian retail store, makes sense. Even so, it’s something limiting. In addition to that, you’ll need to give your names, birthday, email and the wish list purpose.
Customizing it
There are three kinds of wishlist: wedding, teen (for teen parties) and travels/honeymoons. You must select the one that fits your needs. Immediately, after you sign up, the site will show some relevant products according to your election. Again, given that it’s an Argentinian site, you’ll find all the prices in Argentinian pesos, the local currency.
Sharing the list
Once you validate your list, you may invite people. The dashboard is pretty simple. First, you see how much money, guests and gifts you have. For more options, take a look at the left bar. There, you may change basic information about your wishlist, such as name, date and location. The location is important, they even may request you a document to prove the event location. To invite people, look for the button “invitados” (guests) at the left side of the main page. Inthis page, only those who received email may see the wish list. No check mark for private and public lists. Regarding to wishes, the page has some serious limitations. You can’t add wishes. You just invite people and they deposit you money (credit to buy in the store) or send gifts. However, you can’t choose them. People may do this online, calling to their phone number in Argentina or at any Garbarino shop across Argentina.
Buying gifts
After all the guests have sent contributions, you must close the list. Then you can use the funds to buy whatever you like in the online store. The first gift you buy will be sent to your place (if you live in Argentina, of course). Guests may pay the gifts with some local banks, Visa, MasterCard, MercadoPago and some other payments methods. As we’ve seen, Garbarino supports group purchases, so check mark for that. It’s no wonder, taking into account that our wishlist is part of the online store. Also, wishes may only be added from there. Some other features are the discounts. Garbarino offers you bonuses and discounts for some products (up to 10%). But only if you have more than 3 gifts in your lists. Also, you may exchange some credit (up to 30%) for cash. Interesting promotions, aren’t they? You may see which gifts have been sent. At the left of the main page, clicking on “Regalos” (Gifts), so >we can check mark for “Tracks item purchases”. However there’s no surprise me functionality, then no check mark for that. If you choose a wedding list, the site will ask for the personal information of husband and bride. This will help in sending invitations.
More features
Now, regarding to the other features, there is no multi login, since you may only sign up using your email. It’s understandable given that they require personal information, like ID numbers, which can’t be found in social media accounts. Anyways no check mark for multi login. Also, there’s no multi language, only Spanish speakers may access the site. This is understandable too, since the vast majority of users are Argentinian, and that’s a Spanish speaking country. Nonetheless, it makes this site much more restricted to a small sector of users.
Some last words
Alright, we’re almost done. Regarding to the other features, the site has a modern GUI. It is simple and scales to different sizes. At the right there's a pic of how the main page looks like in Android. There’s no bookmarklet, because you can’t add wishes from anywhere, so no check mark for that.
Also, they don’t have a mobile app. It’s a shame, it seems that they lack of some basic features, even though Garbarino is a huge company.
